Working with natural light is an essential skill for any photographer. Natural Light is free, and almost always readily available - in the daytime at least.

We'll be going over the basics of positioning the light to give depth and flattering light, discussing how different light means different positioning may work better, we'll look at the technical camera aspects to balance the light, and briefly discuss editing, we'll talk about setting up your subject, communicating with your subject, and the starting points of how to pose and prompt your subject for the image you want.

We will be taking turns to work as the model for one another - this isn't as much pressure as it sounds, promise!

By being on the other side of the camera for a short time you get a feel for what your own subjects will be thinking, how the direction sounds for them, and help you to improve your own communication and even empathy - all of this creates a better image in the end!

We'll be using each other in the session as models, but don't worry, you don't need to dress up! Come comfy, and be ready to have fun on the other side of the camera for a few minutes.

Sunday 14 April
Newtown Linford - 10am - 3 Hours

This will be a more practical look at photography - we're going to be out in the world, not in a coffee shop for this one!

We'll be talking about getting out of Auto and taking control of your camera.

We're going to start by looking at the priority settings, and discussing some photography lingo like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO - Also known as the exposure triangle. We'll be talking about the effects each one of these settings has on the image, and how to use them to create certain looks and feels to your images.

From there, if we're feeling brave, we'll venture into full auto mode, or stick to one of the priority modes depending on where you're at in your journey, and we'll be discussing the starting points of composition. From using the rule of thirds, to picking a subject, and how to draw the eye through an image. We'll talk some more lingo like leading lines and framing, and give you the tools to take photos you're proud of.

If we have time, we can start to talk about the applications on your camera that are a little more advanced, things like burst mode and when to use is, continuous versus single focus, perhaps even white balance!

This class will focus on the first steps to taking photos you're in full control of, and will give you the tools to continue on your photography journey no matter what stage you're at right now, be it you've only just openned up the box and put the lens on your camera for the first time, or if you're quite happy shooting in Shutter Priority right now. There will be something for you here.

I really enjoyed the workshop. It was my first one and wasn't sure what to expect. I learned so much about camera settings, lighting and how it affects the subject we are taking a photo of. Also had great tips about certain species and what to wait for to capture the perfect action shot. 100% recommend and will be taking more classes. Thank you

Had really enjoyable morning with Serena. Although I've been using my camera for a few years, the sharpness of my images has been hit and miss. Serena took her time to explain the basics and the way she explained it made sense for the first time. The quality of my images has improved and far more consistent. Enjoyed the company of the group and have booked another date

Hi, I'm Sam. I am a professional photographer based in Nottingham, UK. I've been specialising in gig photography for the majority of my professional work but I have a range of experience in portrait and landscape photography. I moved to Nottingham to study Filmmaking at Nottingham Trent University, which has given me a range of opportunities to work with a range of equipment and technical processes.

I shoot with a Sony A7iii with a Samyang 24-70mm lens (+ 18mm) but I often attempt to get my hands on other lenses and cameras to practice techniques and processes I am not familiar with. I love learning as well as teaching and feel that photography is always unique to the photographer and I really enjoy listening to everyone's feelings and thoughts in all aspects of photography.

Photo made after 3 days in Dorset. For 2 mornings I planned to find a good spot and decided to make the picture in the evening time. Usually during summer that beach is full of people, but in the evening where I shoot the beach is often empty. So, with a bit of luck on my 3rd day, I captured the sunset in this beautiful location.
